Medical Ontologies

by The HealthAgents Consortium last modified 2006-10-02 11:31

A concrete contribution from the HealthAgents project will be a new standard ontology of brain tumour data, based on the Semantic Network part of the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS). This ontology is to be described using the Ontology Web Language (OWL). OWL intends to facilitate the application processing of content, as opposed to presenting information to humans. OWL enables an improved machine interpretability of web content when compared to XML, RDF, and RDF Schema (RDF-S). It provides additional vocabulary along with a formal semantics. To the best of our knowledge, HealthAgents will deliver the first comprehensive brain tumour ontology based on OWL.
